Door Gear Box Spindle Type Identification
You will find Door Gearbox Spindles are either Single Spindles or Split Spindles, in this blog post we hope to provide you with the knowledge so you can identify if you have a single spindle or a split spindle.
A Split Spindle Door Gear Box uses two spindles. They are inserted part way into the spindle hole shown below so when a handle is operated, only the internal or external side will operate as highlighted below.
If you can open the door without the key then this will be a single spindle operation (AKA Lever/Lever). Access can only be gained from the outside by key even if the door is unlocked.
The easiest way to identify single spindle operation is:
1. Close the door and stand on the outside of the property.
2. Do not lock the door with a key.
3. Attempt to open the door from the outside whilst it is unlocked. If you can open the door without the key then this will be a single spindle operation, also known as lever lever. Single spindle locks will usually have a solid spindle bar inside the handles and both the handles will be level at the same height.
Now you hopefully know what spindle type you require, you can now purchase a new gearbox or mechanism, depending on the nature of the repair.
